It’s pretty dark on The Lib Crib’s street and while it doesn’t bother me most of the time, at Halloween I think it feels just a bit too ominous for the little Trick or Treaters.
So, after a little research, I’ve discovered some ways to bring spooky but safe lighting to the Lib Crib.
Layer Your Halloween Lighting
For the best look, mix highlight (spotlights), ambient (string lights), accent (walkway lighting), and motion lighting. Layering creates depth, mood, and curb appeal that says spooky—but safe.
Start with a Little Organization
I don’t like cluttered, junky looking outdoor decorations. When a homeowner just randomly places inflatables and decorations and just haphazardly throw lights around the yard, my sister would say, “It looks like the Great Pumpkin threw up all over their yard.”
So, before you go shopping, give a little thought to your Halloween decorating plan.
Start with scenes and spotlight them. For example, highlight your front door or porch. You can create a graveyard or a spooky pumpkin patch and spotlight it with an eerie glow. Light up a giant spiderweb.
Next, line walkways with solar light picks or waterproof string lights for safety.
Then, add colorful accent string lights.
Finally, plan a jump-scare moment with motion activated lights just for fun.
Now, let’s get to the lights.
1. Plug-In Outdoor Halloween Spotlights
Spotlights bring the drama! It’s best to use plug-in lights because they’re sure to be consistent and reliable. Use them to illuminate tombstones, spider webs, or doorways. Choose color-changing LED bulbs or smart plugs so you can switch from eerie purple to pumpkin orange with your phone.
2. Best Solar Outdoor Halloween Lights
Solar lights make decorating easy—no outlets, no tangles. Line your walkway or highlight pumpkins with solar path lights that flicker like candles. Perfect for front yards and driveways.
3. Halloween String Lights for Porches & Fences
Wrap your porch, fence, or bushes with orange and purple Halloween string lights. For extra flair, go for flashing or pattern modes that make your yard feel alive..
4. Motion & Sound-Activated Halloween Lights
Want a quick scare? Add motion-activated lights that flash, scream, or change color when someone walks by. They’re fun for kids and attention-grabbing for guests.
5. Safety Lighting for Walkways & Steps
Don’t forget the practical side—pathway lights prevent slips and falls while keeping your yard glowing. Look for solar lanterns or low-voltage landscape lights that stay bright all night.
